The American people, as a whole, would much rather have someone else tell them what to think than think for themselves. That's why someone like Bush is so popular (and why Fox news and Rush Limbaugh are popular). They go for the quick and simple sound bytes rather than listen to someone of substance and have to use critical reasoning to arrive at a true understanding of the issues.
And only in America could acknowledged government criminals become national heroes and popular radio talk-show hosts. First you've got G. Gordon Liddy, who helped mastermind the illegal break-in at the Watergate Hotel that eventually led to the downfall of Richard Nixon. Then you've got Ollie North, who helped destroy 5,000 e-mails dealing with the Iran-Contra affair and then answered almost all questions during his inquisition with "I don't recall." Both of these people committed high crimes and obstructed justice, yet both are hailed as heroes and are popular with a certain segment of the American public.
And you're going to tell me Americans are good judges of character?
