I have just read that a body of water near where I live which is contaminated with dioxin runoff from a factory that made Agent Orange during the Vietnam War, has yet to be cleaned. Companies that took over the company that made this poison just signed a paper agreeing to do a "study" of the extent of the contamination. Again, the fox rules the henhouse, because I know no such study will be done, and if it is, they will LIE to keep these companies from taking the responsibility for cleaning it up. I remember when I was the age my child is now, that I first took out books from the library to read about water and air pollution. It scared the hell out of me, and I made a promise that I would work to see the world any of my children grew up in be a cleaner world. I am therefore, getting involved in this. My Senators will get a letter from me, and I will write to these companies and urge them TO DO THEIR JOB to clean up Newark Bay of this contamination.
The other thing that infuriates me, is that they KNOW there is dioxin in the water, yet they post NO signs to warn people who still crab there of the danger! Many people who live in that area were not living there when that was going on, and therefore, they may not even realize what they are letting themselves in for. Dioxin is a lethal chemical that causes cancer, liver diseases, immune system diseases, etc. I am sick and tired of these big companies getting away with polluting our natural resources and getting away with it! I just wonder if this study is done at all who will pick up the tab now? Us? I can bet you it won't be these companies. Diamond Shamrock was the company who originally made this agent orange in a poor black neighborhood in Newark (of course, you will NEVER see such a plant in an upscale neighborhood. God forbid a rich white man would have to smell that.) It is now out of business, but the company who took it over should be responsible then for making sure that the Bay is cleaned of this contamination. I don't want our children living in a world like this, and it is truly frustrating to see the extent our greed has taken us. Imagine too, all the Vietnam vets and others who were made ill or died from this "crap." This is simply unacceptable.
