Today was the NJ primary. I totally forgot about it until Erin sent me an e-mail reminding me. So I dashed over to the town hall, where I was informed that there'd only been about 100 people through all day (it is a small town, but still), and I entered the booth. We have touch-screen booths in my town, and I was delighted to learn that, contrary to what I'd been told before, I was able to write in Al Gore's name. And I did. It felt wonderful. It is Al Gore's house, and if nothing else, I wanted to put in a protest vote that Al Gore should be living in it.
Don't yell at me. Come November, I'll be pushing the button for Kerry. But this was my one chance to vote for the man I really want to be voting for, and I wasn't about to give it up.

Yeah, I wonder if Jan and I were the only ones who did that? SandyBeaches, a member of this site, is also from New Jersey. Maybe there were three write-in votes? I couldn't get my husband to join me. In fact, he didn't even vote. He said there was no point. Oh well, for whatever it's worth, I couldn't see going through all we've been through with trying to get Gore in the White House and then not even casting my vote for him.
But on a general note, it was so painfully clear yesterday that this primary system should be changed. The reason so few people in my town turned out to vote yesterday is that there was no point. My town is usually very active politically. We even get big turn-outs for local elections to our township committee. But if we already know who the nominee is going to be, why bother slogging through 90 degree heat to get to the voting booth? What it comes down to is that only the people in the first few primary states actually determined who the Democratic nominee would be. The rest of us didn't get a voice in that process, and there's something very wrong with that.

Boy do I ever relate to this voting process FRUSTRATION. I've harped on it before. I see no reason to not have every state vote at the same time. I can see the primaries starting like they do, allowing for candidates to go around state to state to campaign, but I do not see why every state could not still vote at the same time at the end of the campaign and have all of the candidates to choose from. It gives Iowa and NH such a strange power over the outcome and it twists everything from there. Can anyone explain why it has to remain the way it is? At my recent state's assemblies and conventions I put in an initiative to change it, so at least in Colorado there is some discussion of it going on, but I do not know the outcome.
Anyway, thanks Earthmother for that loud BLUE scream... it felt good to hear/see it!

We'll just be lucky and blessed, if Al Gore still wants to by the time we get him there. What do you think, Al Gore, want to come home to Your House?

Regarding Iowa calling the election first. Funny thing is that the state was running strong for Bush. Add to that what alot of the Dean people were complaining about, that Republicans were voting in the Democratic primaries for Kerry. Apparently, they can switch parties for the primaries and switch back for the general election. I don't usually wear a foil hat, but Kerry was so low on the polls before that first primary, it was really shocking to see Kerry win it.

Actually the polls the weekend before the Iowa caucus showed Dean falling and Kerry surging. I've never bought the Deanies arguement about Republicans crossing over to vote for Kerry. They just used that as an excuse for their own poor showing.

Yea, why would Repubs vote for Kerry just to dis Dean? By all practical matters, Kerry is the better candidate to run in the general election. Plus, Kerry won just about every other primary in the election, which shows he was the choice of every one in the very end.

Whether there were crossovers or not, the process is still critically flawed. It is toooooooo complicated and places too much power on the first states in which it begins. It is too unfair to the voters in states down the line who do not have a chance to vote for the candidates that start out the race. Everyone should have the right to vote for the original candidates. AND it is extremely unfair to the candidates as well.
