Dear Members,
As described in an email yesterday, Al Gore called Miami-Dade County Mayor Alex Penelas ``the single most treacherous and dishonest person I dealt with during the campaign anywhere in America.''
Yet today, Senators Nelson and Graham came to Penelas' side:
Graham: ''People in Florida who know Alex Penelas know he is a quality person and has been a Democrat under difficult circumstances,'' Graham said in a telephone interview with The Herald that was facilitated by the Penelas campaign. ``It is not easy in Miami-Dade County to be a vocal Democrat as a Cuban American.
''He's been very helpful to many Democrats, including Bob Graham, in the past, and I am proud to call him a friend and supporter,'' Graham said.
Nelson: Sen. Bill Nelson questioned Gore's decision to inject himself into the race, saying it hurts the party's ability to keep retiring Sen. Bob Graham's seat and threatens a key state for presidential candidate John Kerry.
"This slash-and-burn politics has gotten us to the point that it is causing gridlock in America," Nelson said.
==============================
It is now our turn to express our view on what happened in Florida during the 2000 election. We know that there were people who did betray Gore in 2000. Evidently, Penelas is one of them. However, instead of defending Gore, a long time US servant, the Florida senators jump to the aid of a traitor mayor, who is dishonest and cost the Democrats key votes in the 2000 election.
To combat this and to defend Gore, we are going to do a mass mailing to the Penelas campaign, Sen. Graham's office, and Sen. Nelson's office. When writing your comments to them, please let them know your emotions about the 2000 election and their betrayal of Al Gore.
Your work is crucial and appreciated!
