well i am sure this one won't be too popular here -- sooner or later both parties need to come to grips with the overpopulation = overimmigration issue.
i live in southern california. i bought my first house with my wife (we have two small children as well) 2 years ago - thank goodness i was able to get my American dream at age 39 after all the not so fortunate times in my life. however - we could not afford to buy a house in greater los angeles - nor ventura county - nor just about anywhere - we made lemonaid out of lemons since i am employed by my own internet business, we decided to go two hours away and get a home in a less expensive mountain resort town which we could afford and quality for.
its your basic supply and demand - demand rises with the immigration levels we are at for housing - (and jobs.) price goes up.
i am not sure if my children will be able to realize the american dream. by then homes in california should be around - who knows, i guess the median will be one million at least at this rate. you'll need to be a 'millionaire' just to be middle class. and where will the jobs come from to pay for those million dollar home mortgages, particularly if outsourcing continues which it probably will.
combine all this with the increased global competition in the world - it doesn't look good to me.
i even personally think the stock market is on a plateau myself and i think it will be for some time. i think we are on the top of the lifecycle.
and the environment is as we all know, not helped any to say the least, by increases in population. the sierra club has looked the other way on this issue - i am not sure why but i would think either because there are more 'liberals' (and by that i mean all issue liberals rather than independent thinkers who pick and choose their issues like myself) in the sierra club - or that they see a need for more democrats to win elections, since republicans have been so stubborn on the environment issues - and that they believe immigrants will register in higher numbers as democrats.
i hope i am wrong. but it seems obvious to me that we need to put up some big "no vacancy" signs at our borders, and enforce this fact as well.
i'm a democrat - but i do feel strongly about this one. my ancestors and all of our ancestors came here at one time - even including the native americans as their ancestors came from Alaska - but when you are full to capacity you are full to capacity it is that simple.
i think the problem is: democrats are worried about the other liberal values - including the diversity issue - and they do not want to be labeled racists. while republicans in their usual manner, only being concerned with history up to the point where they are no longer alive - see immigrants as economic growth (growth in consumption.) and both parties are most likely worried about losing votes if they speak for immigration control, due to the "racist" mis-labeling and from the immigrants themselves.
i really think we are in trouble on this one. i'd say it is just as critical as the global warming issue, even though it is a domestic issue. and that some day there will be those of us saying "told you so."
