In Marietta, Ohio, in 1938, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt said: "Let us not be afraid to help each other -- let us never forget that government is ourselves and not an alien power over us. The ultimate rulers of our democracy are not a President and senators and congressmen and government officials, but the voters of this country." We must begin to address the representatives of this country that they do not hold absolute power but only THE POWER WE BESTOW UPON THEM.. This raises an interesting argument about the legitimacy of this adminstration, as they can only hold the power that we give them through our votes.. This is still being argued today... Think about that! -GoreLeadership

FDR was but one of many Americans who exemplified the true American spirit that appears to be lost today. Here is another :
Thomas Jefferson on following principle:
"True wisdom does not lie in mere practice without principle." --Thomas Jefferson to John Adams, 1816.
"Principle will, in... most... cases open the way for us to correct conclusion." --Thomas Jefferson to Samuel Kercheval, 1816.
"Principles conscientiously adopted [should] not be given up." --Thomas Jefferson: The Anas, 1793.
"When principles are well understood, their application is less embarrassing." --Thomas Jefferson to Gouverneur Morris, 1793.
"A departure from principle in one instance becomes a precedent for a second; that second for a third; and so on, till the bulk of the society is reduced to be mere automatons of misery, to have no sensibilities left but for sin and suffering." --Thomas Jefferson to Samuel Kercheval, 1816.
"Unequivocal in principle, reasonable in manner, we shall be able I hope to do a great deal of good to the cause of freedom and harmony." --Thomas Jefferson to Elbridge Gerry, 1801.
A great man. Jan

Thomas Jefferson: Yes, we did produce a near-perfect republic. But will they keep it? Or will they, in the enjoyment of plenty, lose the memory of freedom? Material abundance without character is the path of destruction.
Little did he know.... Or did he? Jan
