PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (Reuters) - Unfazed by protesters recalling the recount battle that gave him the presidency in 2000, President Bush made his first election-year visit to Florida on Thursday and vowed to win the state."It's great to be back in the great state of Florida. We carried it once and we're going to carry it again," Bush told the audience at a campaign fund-raiser where he added $1 million to his record-large war chest. In Palm Beach County for the first time since it was a focal point in his disputed 2000 election victory, Bush was served a reminder of the bitter recount battle."They stole our votes. Palm Beach County remembers," read one of the signs carried by a small group of protesters along Bush's motorcade route into a golf resort for the fund-raiser.Others held a large banner reading: "Jail to the Thief."Florida is expected to be a battleground state again this year as Bush seeks re-election. Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who was embarrassed by his brother's close victory margin in the state in 2000, said in introducing the president that "we will not rest until you carry Florida and you get re-elected."In 2000, the battle over the Florida recount reached the U.S. Supreme Court, which handed victory in the state, and the presidency, to Bush.Democrats said a confusing "butterfly ballot" in Palm Beach County cost their nominee, Al Gore, thousands of votes, enough to decide the election.Earlier on Thursday, Bush raised another $1 million in Knoxville, Tennessee, giving him $4.8 million for the week. Bush's campaign reported on Wednesday he raised a record $130.8 million last year for his 2004 primary campaign, in which he has no Republican challenger.
