This sounds totally phony, and using Jesus to get votes is despicable no matter who does it. Jan

www.nytimes.com/2003/12/29/politics/campaigns/29DEAN.htmlDean Wants Party Leader to Slow Rivals' Attacks AMES, Iowa, Dec. 28 — Complaining about the torrent of attacks raining down on him from his rivals for the Democratic presidential nomination, Howard Dean on Sunday criticized his party's national chairman, Terry McAuliffe, for not intervening to tone down the debate. "If we had strong leadership in the Democratic Party, they would be calling those other candidates and saying, `Hey look, somebody's going to have to win here,' " Dr. Dean, the former governor of Vermont, told reporters trailing him as he campaigned through central Iowa. Referring to one of Mr. McAuliffe's predecessors, he added, "If Ron Brown were the chairman, this wouldn't be happening." Dr. Dean also implied that many of his supporters, particularly young people, might stay home in November if another Democrat's name ends up on the ballot. ![8-)](http://www.abestweb.com/smilies/smokin.gif)
"I don't know where they're going to go, but they're certainly not going to vote for a conventional Washington politician," he said.
Though Dr. Dean has repeatedly said he would back whichever Democrat wins the nomination, he said Sunday that support was "not transferable anymore" and that endorsements, including his own, don't guarantee anything.""Right now those guys think we're the front-runner, so they're saying all this stuff, `He can't win', Dr. Dean said. "How are they going to win? "What I'm saying is I think we're the best and most capable candidate of beating George Bush because we're the only one that is exciting the party," he said. Mr. McAuliffe could not be reached for comment Sunday. Debra DeShong, the party's communications director, said Mr. McAuliffe would be "handing the nominee, whoever that person may be, a very strong" party organization. Democratic primaries over the past 20 years have been just as tough and just as vigorous," Ms. DeShong said. "All the Democratic candidates, including Governor Dean, have been vigorous about drawing distinctions among themselves." In Ames, Dr. Dean repeated his promise to support whichever Democrat wins. "Any of them are better than what we've got right now," he said. But, he added, "you can't beat George Bush if you behave like the Democrats are behaving." ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Regardless if he meant it or not, he should have never put this out there. I find the above highlighted text to be unacceptable. Dean is " planting the seed" in the minds of his starry eyed followers to stay home if he is not on the ticket... ![8-)](http://www.abestweb.com/smilies/smokin.gif) Paula

I knew I didn't like him for a good reason. He sounds like Bush. Jan

www.usatoday.com/news/politicselections/nation/president/2004-01-12-iowa-blast_x.htmIowa OELWEIN, Iowa (AP) — Howard Dean rejected a voter's request to be more neighborly and stop "mean mouthing" President Bush, saying Sunday someone needs to stand up to the president. Howard Dean served pancakes in the morning and words to Iowa voters later in the day. By Laura Rauch, AP Dale Ungerer, a retiree from Hawkeye, Iowa, lectured Dean for nearly three minutes near the end of a forum aimed at winning voters for Iowa's Jan. 19 caucuses. Ungerer accused Dean and other Democratic presidential hopefuls of dividing the country by bashing Bush instead of outlining their own plans and showing respect for authority. "Please tone down the garbage, the mean mouthing, the tearing down of your neighbor and being so pompous," Ungerer told the former Vermont governor and Democratic front-runner. "You should help your neighbor and not tear him down." "George Bush is not my neighbor," Dean replied. "Yes, he is," Ungerer said, to which Dean responded: "You sit down. You've had your say and now I'm going to have my say." Dean said Bush has harmed communities like Oelwein by failing to fund education programs, by fighting for corporations rather than family farms and sending American troops to Iraq without telling the truth about why they were deployed. "That is exactly the problem. Under the guise of 'support your neighbor' we're all expected not to criticize the president because it's unpatriotic," Dean said to enthusiastic applause. "I think it's unpatriotic to do some of the things that this president has done to this country." Ungerer spoke after Dean extended his regular invitation for the audience to make comments, pose questions and offer "rude remarks." Ungerer, who said he was a registered Republican who voted for Bush but sometimes supports Democratic candidates, left after the exchange. "He put me down definitely because he is who he is," Ungerer said.

A former Senator from NH just told CNN that he will no longer be endorsing Howard Dean, and he is moving back into the undecided column. Ok Al heres your chance, UN-endorse Dean... your ties...

While I don't support Dean, nor really approve of his demeanor in many aspects, I really have to say that the media is being ridiculous regarding his Monday night speech. All he did in my view was let off steam, and at least it was passionate in regards to where he felt he would win next. We really are missing passion in our politics these days. This was brought up yesterday on the radio show I was talking on, and I asked Ms. Arnesen why Bush's mistakes aren't played over and over again by the media. I mean, once, twice, maybe, and sure, late night talk show hosts will think it fodder for them, but come on already, enough is enough. Jan

I agree Jan,
but we don't want the leader of the free world to be 'letting off steam'.
It's just doesn't go with the job.
Dean never was Prez material and never will be.
Would Gore handle his business like that? Look at how Gore handled the 2000 election. A true statesman. A real man.
Dean is thugged out.

I never said I supported Dean, or that I think him presidential material. The media however, does tend to go overboard. Remember what they did to Mr. Gore, and still do to him as well. If Bush had given that same speech, the media would have touted it as a grand, patriotic, passionate declaration. It's bs. Jan

Paula, did he say why he was endorsing Dean? He said that the speech in IA sealed it, but was not the only reason. He said that he had began to see a pattern with Dean that does not sit well with him. He sited the incident where Dean got hot with a elderly man in an IA town hall meeting, where Dean told the man to sit down and be quiet. Also where Sharpton asked Dean about blacks serving in his cabinet in VT. In all three cases he felt that Dean handled himself poorly and he felt that Dean did not have the temperament ![](http://www.industreal.spb.ru/smiles/mad.gif) or good judgment needed to be an effective candidate. He flat out said he would no longer be endorsing him and that he was now officially back in the undecided column. What I don't understand is why he thought he was an effective candidate to begin with. ![](http://www.industreal.spb.ru/smiles/tongue.gif) Anyway, I wish Al would do the same thing...we can only hope when Dean finishes 3rd in NH that Gore will be forced to act. I would love to see a Gore/Edwards ticket. That what should have happened in 2000. Wouldn't that be grand... ![](http://www.industreal.spb.ru/smiles/party.gif) Lets drink to that. ![](http://www.industreal.spb.ru/smiles/drink.gif)

Gore/Edwards is my favorite ticket as well! We must be ready to stand against the war but the positive message Edwards is spreading is a welcome contagion. First and foremost, we must inaugurate Al Gore as our President! My eye is fixed on the prize!

Yeah Dolphins. That does create a nice picture. Picture Al Gore and Edwards standing there across from george and Cheney. Think that might conjure up some change in people's minds? Does in mine.
